Using First Principles Analyses to Make Better Decisions in Manufacturing

Abstract

The accuracy with which the behavior of manufacturing systems can be predicted is a critical factor in how well such systems can be designed, maintained, and improved. The use of First Principles can greatly enhance our ability to predict system behavior and hence make better decisions. Appropriate use of First Principles can help to identify not only what will happen in a given system configuration but also why it will happen. After some detailed discussion on the application of First Principles, an example of a First Principles application is given.
